The Trial: Day Nine

The court adjourns and next trial is on Monday the June 1st. Lone witness from DASSK side testifies in today’s trial.

There are rumors that the court is ready to make its verdict as soon as next week.

It seems that the regime is more defensive.

The question is how long more the international community can keep up its attention.

The Trial: Day Eight

Not much comes out from the trial itself. Daw Khin Khin Win and Ma Win Ma Ma testify.

There are more voices expressing dissent even from ASEAN SG, Surin Pitsuwan.

The Trial: Day Seven

DASSK was cross questioned by the judges. Diplomats and some journalists were allowed. DASSK submitted a written statement and insisted her innocence.

More international outcry comes out. This time also joins even China in the name of ASEM – the 9th Asia - Europe Meeting - which was held in Hanoi, Vietnam. Foreign ministers call for the release of DASSK and all other political prisoners.

House arrest was officially lifted. The authority said that they had planned to release her and that faces with no surprise by the international community. This kind of international attention and pressure is quite significant and has never happened before.

The Trial: Day Six

23 witnesses but no security official who guarded DASSK’s house.

The Trial: Day Five

The court accepts to hear the accusations against DASSK plus three. Monday the May 25th will be the beginning of big days for both sides.

The Trial: Day Four

Day Four expectedly turns back to normal: no media, no diplomat.

International outcry is clearer and louder but no one knows where it leads. Ban ki-moon said that he will go to Burma in an interview with CNN but mentioned no exact date. The speculation is that he probable goes while he is in Asia after going to Sri Lanka. The question is: does his visit this time make real impact on the situation? If any, what kind of impact it may have?

Talk of ICC and Security Council comes out from different corner of the world. It also is still questionable.

One thing which may be worth to note is the presentation of state media about the trial. It no longer mentions DASSK as defendant in Burmese; the mention of the accused violation state media is no longer the violation of state protection law.

It becomes more and more interesting.

The Trial: Day Three

Day Three witnesses an unexpected events. Some journalists and 30 some diplomats were allowed to have a look at the trial. More, diplomats from three Rangoon based embassies got the chance to meet with DASSK separately: Russia as the president of UNSC, Thailand as the president of ASEAN, Singapore as the Dean of Diplomatic Corps. in Burma. The meeting was videotaped and broadcasted from MRTV.

There came out a lot of speculation, a lot of comments on the move.

There will come more speculation and more comments.

So par more speculators and more commentators.

Good news? Hold your breath!

The Trial: Day Two

Five witnesses - 4 police officers and one quarter level official – testified. There was not much note-worthy. It was almost about John William Yettaw.

Noting at current pace of the trial and the news of more than 20 witnesses plan to testify, the trial could take as long as three months according to some estimation.

Let’s assume that the estimated time-length of the trial is right enough, there might raise one more question: what’s the motive behind this?

For sure is that Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is going to stay inside Insein prison compound during this. She will not have the chance to access outside news like she stays at her home. One thing no one can know for sure is that how much chance her lawyers could get talking and discussion with her not only about ongoing trial but about other concerned matters.

She still has not received another visit by her personal physician, Dr. Tin Myo Win. And it’s also not clear that he will be allowed to do so. Has he requested? Has Daw Aung San Suu Kyi requested?

So far, the trial has raised more questions than answers, if any.

International outcry is still growing. But, will it go far enough to reach a viable outcome? It’s very unlikely citing May 30, 2003 situation.

Who’s watching closely?
